Coffee Makers, Hillary and Me
May 1, 2008 by daranee

I live in Seattle. I blog. I have a coffee category for my blog. In fact my coffee posts have gotten more hits than anything else. I am definitely a coffee connoisseur.
Even as a fervent Obama supporter, I nonetheless have to say I can’t blame Hillary for not knowing how to use those terrible coffee machines at the gas station. Who buys coffee from a machine at a gas station anyway? Are these the same people that buy the three hour old hotdog and hamburger? While we’re at it don’t gas stations sell brewed coffee in a pot?
I’m getting more annoyed at this whole “elitist” thing anyway. You’re elitist if you like espresso? Give me a break. If I’m an elitist I’d like to have the millions in the bank to back it up. I don’t. Besides you can now buy espresso at McDonald’s. Nothin’ elitist about McDonald’s.
Let’s be honest, most politicians don’t lead the life we lead regardless of whether they are Democrat, Republican, man or woman. My job like most people’s jobs doesn’t pay my expenses on top of my salary. I have to pay for my own lunch, my own transportation, gas, I don’t get to vote on what my next salary increase is going to be and I don’t get to opt out of Social Security. I’ve never ridden in a private jet and I certainly never have flown first class. I wouldn’t call politicians elitist, but they are certainly clueless.
So enough with the shows. If you play basketball regularly, by all means play basketball. If you don’t bowl regularly, don’t bowl. If you don’t regularly shoot animals, do shots, or pump gas, then spare us. As for Hillary, try McDonald’s for your espresso. I hear they’re pretty good.
Good Stuff. Can’t wait for more!

Politicians and college football coaches. The AAUP came out with their survey, showing the minimum 10X above a senior, full professor makes that an average college football coach makes. But on top of that million dollar salary, the coaches and their immediate staff get (1) country club memberships (2) golf vacation packages (3) a new car every year (4) free tickets to shows anywhere in the country etc. etc. —- Now, let’s hear Hillary call college football coaches, the darling of ordinary upstanding Americans (god, have you seen the droves of Alumni, most of them blue-haired and sweatshirt-toting), “elitist.”
Nice use of the Jay and Silent Bob pic. Good choice.
It’s all just pandering. It seems very difficult for the average person to really get to know, and connect with political candidates nowadays. Watching Obama drink a Bud from a can was rather painful.
I feel sorry for politicians, especially ones at this level. It’s impossible to just be yourself and allow your foibles and quirks to show. You could argue, ‘well, they are the ones who chose to get into this line of work’, true, but it’s the public, through the media, that puts these pressures on these people. Everything important in society is about power and the desire to attain the position of greatest power is more than a mildly moralistic individual can handle.
Ultimately there’s nothing wrong with an espresso. But does everyone who drink espresso really like it better than a regular cup of joe? That’s where elitism comes in; when you buy the $200 pair of jeans - because you can - instead of the similarly styled $50 pair that has a different brand name stitched into the ass.
Yeah, I kinda sympathised with her on the confusing coffee machine, too. Not only are they hard to use, the coffee is its own special kind of hell. Have you really heard that McDonald’s espresso is OK?! I can’t imagine that it’s true, but I hope never to be in a position to find out. “Super Size Me” kinda cured me of that!
I’ll be honest I haven’t tried the coffee at McDonald’s but my boss swears it’s quite good.
C. Fraser, I can only guess that Vinny and I both expressed an identical cringe when reading “But does everyone who drink espresso really like it better than a regular cup of joe?” It is better. But then he’s from Seattle too.
Surprisingly, I don’t go out for espresso. I bought an Italian Bialetti stove top espresso maker a few years ago. They are quite reasonably priced ($25 or less) and unlike an electric machine they last a long time. I buy coffee from one of the many places in Seattle that roasts their own beans to make my espresso. I warm up a big bowl or large cup of milk in the microwave. It’s not steamed, but it’s still good. And there’s my latte.
Everyone at my work goes out for coffee, but I refuse to pay $4 for something I can make at home.
I didn’t mean to insinuate that everyone, including you, didn’t like espresso better, I was just expressing that some people are mindless drones and do what everyone else is doing, because it’s showy, and may provide for them a particular image they are hoping to project.
I’ve been known to spend money on a caramel frappacino (sp?), when the mood hits me, mainly because every so often I need my caramel fix. :).
I wonder if there’s a such thing as a stove top caramel maker?
Funny you should say that. They have stove top latte makers, but those are in the $90 range. You put the milk up in the top and it simultaneously steams your milk as it brews your espresso. So the industry is just waiting for you to take it one step further.
Even if I wanted to buy one, they only come in cow print which I’m afraid is a little too cheesy for me.
