well of course not. still they are fun and it can take quite a bit work to create a good one.
The Escapists improv troupe play a game called Poets Corner where you have to, yes, improvise poetry. For me it’s almost easier to improvise a haiku than a limerick.
It’s funny this should come up, Roger Ebert just made a huge blog post about limericks. I never knew Edward Lear invented the form!
Pretty sure you won’t want to read the whole thing, but here you go: http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/11/how_pleasant_to_meet_mrlear.html
Vinny, great link. I enjoyed those.
R.J., did I mention I saw The Improvised Shakespeare Company? Improvising Shakespeare seems tough. There was definitely poetry involved though I can’t remember how much was prose.
Whoever says limericks ain’t sophisticated
oughta have their critic’s card confisticated,
They’ve got iambs and trochees,
Plus dumb little jokeys,
They know that if they’d only invisticate it.
Well now that is sophisticated!
There once was a fellow named Rick,
who liked what we call a card trick.
But what he liked better,
was Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter,
and a five line poem that intends to be witty or humorous.
